Rolling through New Mexico oblast on I-40, my eyes peeled for the legendary Gems dotting the old “Route 66” landscape. This image Flashed By and I knew it was Gold! But going “Out of Route” is a no no in the trucking industry. How far was I willing to go to turn around and return to Cuervo for the shot? Luckily, Newkirk was only 9 miles away and I got the image. I’m very excited to share this Beautiful painting with you.
Cuervo is the Spanish word for Raven and it sits 4,859’/ 1,481m above Sea Level in the Beautiful central eastern part of New Mexico. The area has been inhabited for nearly 13,000 years, initially by the Clovis people. In the mid 1,500’s the area was visited by Spanish Explorer Coronado and then incorporated into their American colonies. The area then transferred to Mexican ownership and then lost in the Mexican-American War (1846-48).
Cuervo started modern life in 1902 when the CRI&G railroad opened a siding on their Texas to Arizona extension. In 1910 the railroad bypassed Cuervo to focus on larger Santa Rosa to the west. Things didn’t pick up again until 1926 when Rt. 66 started bringing in motorists looking for fuel and food. In the late 1960’s I-40 cut directly through the heart of town and destroyed the economy. This home sits at 1001 Cross Rd, 150’ from I-40. Who lived here? What were their lives like?
This is the 39th of 39 images currently in my “Psychedelic Americana” series “Painting the American Dream”.
